After several weeks of contentious debate about Shoreline Unified School District’s leadership, the board unanimously approved contracts for three administrators last week, leaving one top position noticeably unfilled. Jane Realon, the principal for nearly two decades at Tomales and Bodega Bay Elementary Schools and the district’s most veteran administrator, is leaving her post and may be replaced by an interim principal if trustees approve an agreement with James Patterson, better known as “JP,” at today’s meeting at West Marin School.
Ms. Realon, who came to Shoreline in 1994 from a middle school in Monterey County, was on a family vacation this week and was unavailable for comment.
For the district’s other principals—Adam Jennings at Tomales High School and Matt Nagle at West Marin-Inverness School—the board approved two-year contracts, an expansion of previous one-year deals. “Because we wanted to clearly say we hope they stick around,” board president Jane Healy explained.
Trustees agreed on a three-quarter position for Mr. Stubbs at an annual salary of $125,956, along with $6,000 car and $1,200 cell phone allowances. Donna Faure, a West Marin School parent, asked if trustees had considered a longer contract. Trustee Kegan Stedwell said the board did not want to be bound to a set number of days as it continues to seek the best balance between half and full time.
Contracts for a new third-grade teacher at Tomales Elementary, English and part-time Spanish teachers at Tomales High and two special education teachers at West Marin were all unanimously approved. The board also formed a standing committee to review its own policies and their implementation.
At today’s meeting the board will approve a preliminary budget, which must be revised by September to cut $1.2 million over the next three years, and the Local Control and Accountability Plan, which sets annual benchmarks for the district’s goals. Trustees will also consider hiring a new counselor, Consuelo Marx, who would replace Steffan O’Neill at the high school.
