The Environmental Action Committee of West Marin responded to a recent opinion piece in this paper written by Corey Goodman and Peters Prows, in which the authors said they were “skeptical” that groups like the E.A.C. supported ranching. In an email to its listserv, the group argued it has no intention of trying to put historic dairies and ranches in the Point Reyes National Seashore out of business. “We understand that our success in protecting Drakes Estero Wilderness has caused some anxiety for many leaseholders, and perhaps made them willing to believe false rumors that EAC wanted the dairy operations and ranches gone too,” wrote Amy Trainer, the executive director. “As our actions and written comments make clear, this is simply not true. EAC is working collaboratively to find solutions that strike the critical balance of protecting national park resources while also enabling the small organic dairy and ranch operations to remain viable.” Working under the assumption that agriculture would remain, she said her group has met with ranchers and supports 20-year leases.
