West Marin commuters can expect road delays through mid to late November as the county improves roadway resilience, safety, and traffic flow ahead of the winter wet season. The one-way traffic light on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard east of Olema Hill is allowing crews to repair a 75-foot section of retaining wall damaged by 2023 storms. Meanwhile, crews are redesigning the intersection at Nicasio Valley Road and Point Reyes-Petaluma Road with a new turn pocket that will reduce the risk of conflicts. The project also includes drainage and shoulder improvements, guardrail replacement, new pavement markings, and a retaining wall designed with input from residents. This week, crews also began paving Hicks Valley Road and Chileno Valley Road, with alternating traffic control. In two weeks, crews will begin to execute phase two of a paving project on Olema Hill. Phase one, completed last year, addressed pavement deterioration caused by storms, while this second phase will add two layers of pavement along a roughly two-mile section of Sir Francis Drake between Platform Bridge Road and Highway 1. The shoulder will be widened in some areas. “This is critical infrastructure and it’s a top priority for us,” said Anastasia Pallas, the media specialist for the Department of Public Works. “The investments come with some short-term disruptions and growing pains, but at the end of the day, it’s going to be very beneficial to all, especially those moving across West Marin every day.”
