A group of parents at last Thursday’s Shoreline Unified School District board meeting expressed concerns over the school counselor at Tomales High, claiming he has unfairly told some students that they are not “college material.” The parents have hopes that, with a new superintendent taking the helm in July, action may be taken to remedy the problem. Adriana Lopez, a student who graduated in 2011, told the Light that some students were told they were not college-equipped and that the counselor, Steffan O’Neill, did not encourage or assist struggling students. “It’s horrible having someone in school who is supposed to encourage you to go to college discouraging you from going because you’re not good enough,” she said. The Light was unable to reach a board member or Mr. O’Neill for comment. There have also been concerns about a pay raise approved for the chief business official of the district. Though teachers and staff were all given a retroactive 3 percent raise for the 2012-2013 school year and another  3 percent raise for the coming year, the business officer was given an additional 12 percent raise. “That should have happened a long time ago. She’s one of the best business officials in Marin County. She was one of the lowest paid,” said Tom Stubbs, who will officially become the district’s superintendent on July 1 and said he could not comment on personnel matters.
