The Tomales football team handled Emery 70-6 at home last Friday in the first round of the North Coast Section Division V playoffs and will advance to the semifinals against second-seeded St. Bernard’s of Eureka at home this Saturday at 7 p.m. Third-seeded Tomales (8-2-1) rushed for a total of 363 yards, with senior running back Michael Guerrero putting up 145 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries and sophomore running back Anthony Feliciano scoring three touchdowns and gaining 107 yards on 10 carries. Outmatched Emery (1-10-0) only fielded 13 players during the game and received the playoff berth because of its 1-1 record against Division V teams in a mixed-division Bay Football League. Tomales Coach Leon Feliciano said the team’s strategy of foregoing punts in its own territory was misguided and easy to capitalize on. “Any decent team could’ve scored a lot of points,” he said. “It was almost a nightmare-in-reverse for us. I never thought I wouldn’t feel good about scoring 70 points.” Senior linebacker Justin Kehoe was named North Central League II defensive MVP last week and Coach Feliciano said his defensive leader deserved the honor. “He’s such a big, physical guy,” he said. “He’s been making big plays after big plays all year long.”
