A bell lap is the last lap, typically considered when the leader of a race reaches the final loop. It’s an apt metaphor and title for Aggie Murch’s new book of 15 short stories, “The Bell Lap: Stories for Compassionate Nursing Care.” Ms. Murch, a registered nurse and Bolinas resident who was the founding program director at KWMR, said that the stories are about death—or loneliness, or secrets, or sharp observation. But each story contains a “bell lap” moment. “The bell lap moments occur when life changes, most frequently among the elderly population and rarely for the better,” she wrote in a synopsis of the collection. Some pieces focus on someone who is ill, while others narrate the stories of caregivers or other loved ones left behind. She said that the collection, which is being published by CRC Press, could help “medical and nursing students remember that people who come in to our care have stories” critical to fostering compassion. Ms. Murch turned one of the stories, “Doctor Patel Comes to Tea,” into a radio play. KWMR programmers will perform it live this Saturday at the Bolinas Community Center, as part of a KWMR fundraiser and book launch. Afterward Ms. Murch will be in conversation with Davia Nelson, of the Kitchen Sisters, which produces radio program for outlets like NPR. The event starts at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and admission, is $10.
