The site for Good Earth Natural Foods’ new store location at 720 Center Boulevard in Fairfax has been recently identified as a potential prehistoric archeological site. In June, midden and shell fragments were found inside the existing building, which used to function as an Albertson’s Grocery outlet and is currently undergoing renovations. In July, four fragments of bone were recovered from soil samples and identified as human: a nickel-sized fragment of a human cranium, a long bone fragment and two other small fragments. Experts believe the remains to be historical remnants of the federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, whose ancestors were known to have lived in and around the area prior to settlement by European immigrants in the nineteenth century. Store associates said in a press release that any further remains that are found will be reburied by Graton Rancheria somewhere on the site.
