The Briones Lions Club, which has organized the Fourth of July parade in Bolinas since at least 1972, is canceling the traditional barbecue because of a lack of volunteers. Karen Dibblee, a Lions Club member and owner of the Bolinas Hardware Store, said the club had only seven or eight active members, all over 60 years old. Organizing the event is a huge amount of work, she said, involving securing county permits for road closures, purchasing insurance, installing and taking down rebar to protect emergency road access, ordering porta-potties, organizing a tug-of-war and staffing the parking lot on Mesa Road—to mention some duties. And in the past five or so years, attendance “seems to have grown exponentially,” she said. Of the many elements of the weekend, she said the barbecue made the most sense to relinquish this year, given the large number of volunteers—around 20—it requires. The group has considered canceling the event entirely, she said, given the visitor overload. But she said that the town is, in fact, just as busy on other holiday weekends—and those holidays happen without any traffic control. The parade also raises about $5,000 a year for the Briones, which uses the funds to support a wide variety of causes and groups: local summer camps, eye and dental exams, parks, fire departments and senior services, to name a few. This year’s event will also give one youth a chance to display his singing chops: 11-year-old Will DeLormier, of Bolinas, will sing the national anthem, a tradition long performed by Annie Crotts until she died a few years ago. Ms. Dibblee encouraged attendees to leave pets at home, given the big crowds and the inevitable, if illegal, firecrackers that go off. To volunteer with the parking lot, road closures, crowd control, litter pick-up, rebar installation or rebar removal, contact Ms. Dibblee at [email protected], call the store at (415) 868.2900 or stop by the store. On July 4, the Bolinas-Stinson Beach tug-of-war starts at 9 a.m. at the end of Wharf Road. The parade starts at 11 a.m. The road into town will be closed from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with $10 parking and a shuttle from Mesa Park and downtown drop-off for handicapped and special needs people.
