The Orionid meteor shower is active from mid-October, peaking on Oct. 21. Orion takes up residence in the southern West Marin skies, just overhead in the morning darkness.
Black tailed deer linger around the picnic area stocking up on the bounty of acorns; it is amazing to watch them in “deer yoga” bending under the horse corral fences.
The duck hunting season on the Tomales Bay Ecological Reserve brings unexpected popping sounds to the area from duck hunters, often in the mornings; it begins this weekend. The season ends in January.
Road paving projects are scheduled for Bear Valley Road on Oct. 22 to 23; plan to use Highway 1 and Sir Francis Drake to bypass the area. It will bring delays in accessing Limantour Road.
Special bat talks are slated for 1:30 p.m. at Bear Valley Visitor Center on Oct. 24, 25 and 31 to honor Bat Conservation Week. Bats roost in some of the park barns and other structures as well as hollow trees.
