Another super moon is coming up on Wednesday, July 13, slightly closer than it was in June. Extreme morning low tides just around sunrise accompany it.
No matter how many times I walk on Bear Valley Trail, there is always something new to me. Chipmunks: They are zipping around, feeding on seeds, bird eggs and nuts. They are found in coniferous forests and often eat on a rock or log so they can look around for predators. The trail remains very green, with sprays of red elderberry berries brightening the scene. There are the huge leaves and round clusters of dark-blue elk clover berries, and plenty of squirrel confetti—made when squirrels thoroughly chew up Douglas fir cones into piles of scales.
From the national seashore: the annual seal protection measures end Friday, July 1, when Drakes Estero and other seal breeding areas reopen for boating. Drakes Beach is fully reopened. Park visitor centers and trails are open on July Fourth. Reminder that fireworks are not permitted in Marin County. They are disruptive to wildlife and create additional fire danger in our current drought conditions.
