Can an ancient story most everyone knows create gripping tension? What about when 23 characters are played by a single actor? Without question, actor Eddie Izzard not only creates profound tension, but also gives a superbly captivating solo performance of “Hamlet.”
For nearly two hours and without any costume changes, chameleon Eddie exquisitely makes Shakespeare’s murder mystery easily accessible. Adapted by her brother, Mark Izzard, and directed by Selina Cadell, our Prince of Denmark is like a cage-trapped animal confined within Tom Piper’s set, while Tyler Elich’s lighting gives all the air needed to breathe. Expecting a lot before seeing a performance isn’t usually a good idea. This is the exception—one astonishing “Hamlet” fit for a king.
Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” shows at the Strand Theater in San Francisco through April 20.
