Plato, writing in the 4th century B.C.E., told a tale of Thales, the Greek philosopher and astronomer, who once tumbled down a well while examining the night sky. A maidservant, coming upon the scene, teased him for being so eager to know the heavens that he ignored what lay at his feet.
