Three young adults, all graduates from Lagunitas School District, were killed in a solo crash early Tuesday morning when their car went off the road and struck a utility pole and two trees, splitting the car in half.

Chance Maurer, 18, of Novato; Lancelot Argall, 18, of San Anselmo; and Chancellor Argall, 20, of Woodacre were determined dead at the scene.

Mr. Maurer was driving, and all three passengers were wearing seatbelts. At 12:09 a.m., the Marin County Fire Department responded to a call from an off-duty National Park Service ranger who saw the crashed 2013 Toyota Corolla on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, a couple hundred yards from the Turtle Island Restoration Network.

Highway Patrol Officer Andy Barclay said that based on the significant damage to the car, which had been headed west, the vehicle must have left the road at a high speed. The limit on the section of road is 40 miles per hour.

Post mortem examinations and toxicology exams have been scheduled for later this week.

Lancelot and Chancellor were brothers whose father owns Grier Argall Plumbing in Fairfax. All three men had attended Lagunitas School and Lancelot graduated from Drake High in 2016. Chancellor graduated from Tamalpais High is 2015 and Mr. Maurer was enrolled at San Andreas High this year, but the district’s superintendent’s office said he was not attending.

A vigil was held on Wednesday night in their honor at Sir Francis Drake High School.

At the site of the crash, loved ones of the deceased have created a commemorative shrine off to the side, where there are still visible marks on the road and safety glass on the dirt. Flowers, candles, heart-shaped rocks and a deck of playing cards lay on the ground, and bouquets and pictures for both Argall brothers hang in a tree.
