“Bring out your bikes!” is the clarion call from the Valley Bike Fest, a new celebration of bicycles taking place on Saturday, Aug. 17 in Woodacre. Hosted by the nonprofit Access4bikes and the Woodacre Improvement Club, the event hopes to congregate cyclists from across the county to celebrate the sport in a region widely recognized as the birthplace of mountain biking. “West Marin is a highly popular destination for biking, yet there are no celebrations or events that showcase the sport’s vibrant community,” said Vernon Huffman, a Woodacre resident and the executive director of Access4bikes. The festival was the brainchild of Elysha Irish, the director of the 112-year-old improvement club. Ms. Irish said club engagement has declined in recent years, and she and Mr. Huffman hope the festival will reinvigorate the club and draw in new members. The WIC offers a variety of amenities, including a pool, gym, tennis and basketball courts, along with programming such as classes, concerts and movie nights. Annual membership fees are $763 for individuals and $1,145 for families, with a one-time initiation fee of $500. “We believe it’s time to make better use of this space and put the community back into ‘community,’” Mr. Huffman said. The festival will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature a variety of activities. Festivalgoers can demo bikes, head out on group rides, sharpen their skills and enjoy food from local vendors and live music. The event is free to ensure broad accessibility. “We wanted to remove any barriers to entry, as inclusivity is a core value of the sport,” Mr. Huffman said. The festival will cater to all ages and skill levels with a kids’ bike rodeo, a BMX show, an e-mountain bike ride and a challenging 25-mile gravel ride with 4,000 feet of climbing, led by Otis Guy, a pioneer of mountain biking.
