An Inverness man woke up to a stolen truck one morning in March, within a day of another truck disappearing in Fairfax and turning up a week later just a block away from his house. Aaron Ely, who manages Point Reyes Vacation Rentals, reported to California Highway Patrol that his silver 2002 Toyota Tacoma had been stolen on March 13 from the street outside his Second Valley residence. He said that for a couple of months leading up to the theft, several things had been stolen out of the vehicle, including three jackets and two sets of keys. “I thought I was misplacing things,” he said. The night it was stolen, he had locked the truck at 10 p.m. Sometime that next night, a red Toyota Tacoma was stolen from Scenic Drive in Fairfax. It was recovered on March 18 a block from Mr. Ely’s home, on Cameron Street. According to Corporal Jonathan Judge of the Fairfax Police Department, a firearm was recovered from the red truck (the original report of the stolen truck did not mention a firearm). The investigations of both the truck and the gun are still pending. Mr. Ely said that around the same time that his truck was stolen, one of the vacation homes he manages nearby, which has an external laundry room, showed evidence of a break-in. Nothing was missing, but he said it looked as if someone may have slept in the laundry room. One of the things Mr. Ely loves about Inverness is the strong sense of community. “It is a perfect balance of nature and culture and open-mindedness,” he said. He never used to lock his doors, but now he finds himself checking and double-checking the windows and doors every night. “It sucks,” he said, “It’s a game changer. Now I lock up everything and carry keys around. I have a daughter.” He also has a dog, which used to ride around in the truck with his head out of the window. “The person who is really suffering the most is the dog,” he said.
