When Rachel and Bill Bonini bought the Continental Inn from Penny Hammond last fall, they had no idea they were headed into one of the longest and gloomiest winters Tomales had seen in decades. Tourism slowed from Muir Beach to Dillon Beach and everywhere in between. Now, as travelers far and wide begin their summerly West Marin pilgrimage, the Tomales Hotel is having its grand reopening on June 9, celebrating its new ownership and recent remodel. “They always say make hay while the sun shines,” Ms. Bonini said. “Here we are, [eight months] later, and we’re looking forward to what comes with the summer!” The event will be an opportunity for locals to tour the hotel’s remodeled interior while enjoying appetizers, drinks and a raffle for gift cards at Tomales staples like the Route One Bakery & Kitchen, the general store and K&A Takeaway. Ms. Bonini, originally from Sonoma, moved in with her husband several years ago. His family goes back five generations in Tomales, to the very first owners of the William Tell—the saloon next to the hotel, which stayed in the Bonini family until the early ’90s. Mr. Bonini works as a building contractor and Ms. Bonini worked as a consultant for local dairies but has transitioned to working at the hotel full-time. The couple purchased the business from Ms. Hammond, who built the hotel in 1989 and ran it until her death in 2021. The Boninis said they saw the purchase as a way to keep the establishment under local ownership and plan for their retirement down the line. “I think people were really afraid it would turn into a McDonalds or Starbucks,” Ms. Bonini said of the inn’s new ownership. “We felt like, if we could do it, it’d be really exciting for not just us but the town and the family of the folks who live here.” As first-time small-business owners, taking on a tourism-driven business at the start of a wet winter was difficult. What they thought would be a seamless transition was protracted by the bureaucratic minutiae involved in applications for business permits and loans. But their work has paid off, and they are ecstatic to provide a fresh take on a longtime Tomales business. When the Boninis started remodeling, the oddities and quirks they found in the hotel required the help of friends. Chairs with three legs shoved against walls, interesting stains found on far corners and Penny’s signature mango-colored paint were a few of their inheritances. The couple ordered pizzas from the bakery and invited friends over to help make things right. The hotel has five single king-bed rooms and four double queen-bed rooms. Two on the first floor are fitted with A.D.A. accessibility. “It’s exhausting! I mean there’s so much to think about with the hotel each day. It’s really been great to see it come together and it’s rewarding, but it was a long way here,” Ms. Bonini said. A grand opening celebration takes place from noon until 6 p.m. on Friday, June 9 at the Tomales Hotel, on the corner of Highway 1 and Dillon Beach Road.
