The Board of Supervisors has approved new speed limits for three sections of Point Reyes-Petaluma Road. The segment from the Marin County line to the McEvoy Ranch will see a decrease from 55 mph to 50 mph. From the Red Hill summit south to the Spaletta Ranch—a distance of less than half a mile—there will be an increase from 40 mph to 45 mph. And drivers traveling from Platform Bridge to Highway 1 in Point Reyes Station will have to slow down from 50 mph to 45 mph. State law mandates local jurisdictions to periodically conduct engineering and traffic surveys and set speed limits based on the prevailing speed—or the speed of 85 percent of drivers.
