Norman Solomon, progressive political activist and media critic, is planning a protest this Saturday outside a Belvedere residence where House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who has supported the Obama administration’s classified national surveillance program, will appear at a private reception fundraiser billed at $2,000 to $32,000 a ticket. Mr. Solomon, a former Congressional candidate and West Marin resident, announced that the free public gathering will include speeches and picketing at the intersection of Eucalyptus Road and Golden Gate Avenue, starting at 1 p.m. Ms. Pelosi, the highest-ranking female politician in American history, defended the recently revealed domestic surveillance program during a gathering of progressives in San Jose late last month, eliciting an eruption of boos and heckling from the crowd. She said that Edward Snowden, the former contractor for the NSA who leaked information about mass surveillance programs, “did violate the law” and that “we have to have the balance between security and privacy.” She late drew applause when she said we should not be outsourcing national security.
