Four of seven seats on Shoreline Unified School District’s board of trustees are up for election this November and at least one trustee, representing southwest Sonoma, won’t be running to keep her seat. To help drum up candidates this election season, the Family Engagement Committee at Tomales Elementary School is hosting a question-and-answer night on Tuesday for those interested in serving, with trustees fielding questions about responsibilities and expectations. This election season comes on the heels of frustration from many in the community over the school board’s handling of superintendent Tom Stubbs, who is leaving the district at the end of the school year. In 2014, Mr. Stubbs resigned when he learned the board would not renew his contract, but trustees reversed course after outcry from parents and teachers who supported him. Mr. Stubbs resigned again this month, after the board did not offer him a two-year contract. Of the four trustees whose terms are up at the end of this year, board president Jill Manning-Sartori, who represents Marshall and Tomales, will run again; Monique Moretti, who represents southwest Sonoma, will not seek reelection; and the other Sonoma trustee, Clarette McDonald, has not yet decided whether to run. Kegan Stedwell—who represents Point Reyes Station, Olema and Inverness—did not respond to Light inquiries regarding her plans by press time. (Seats on the board are divided between three geographic areas in the district, which reaches from Inverness to Bodega Bay, to ensure spread-out representation.) As for potential candidates, the man who challenged two longtime incumbents in 2013 and lost told the Light this week that he will seek the Point Reyes seat. Avito Miranda, the president of the West Marin School’s Parent-Teacher-Student Association who has long been involved in the English Language Advisory Committee, said he will run again in large part because the board needs Latino representation. Despite the fact that over half of students in the district identify as Latino, the board is comprised of Anglos. The Q&A will be held from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19 in the Tomales Elementary School Assembly Room. Translation services and childcare will be provided. Candidates can procure candidate applications starting July 13 from election offices in Marin or Sonoma, depending on the area in which the candidate is running. Applications are due Aug. 7 and the election is Nov. 3.
