Bob Raines, the superintendent of the Shoreline Unified School District who was arrested on June 8 on charges of lewd acts with a child under the age of 14, was placed on unpaid leave by the school board last week.

The county district attorney’s office is reviewing the case to decide whether or not to file charges, and the school district and sheriff’s office are being tight-lipped about what happened. Details about when and where the alleged crime was committed have not been shared, and the district has not confirmed that the alleged victim was a student. The crime was reported on June 1 in Tomales. The Light’s requests for more information from board members, principals, family advocates and counselors have gone unanswered.

At last week’s board meeting, no public comment was allowed before the board went into closed session. Afterwards, board president Jill Manning-Sartori announced that Mr. Raines was placed on leave under an education code that guides school districts when employees commit a sex offense; the move will allow Mr. Raines to recover his wages if he is acquitted.

The board also discussed anticipated litigation but did not share any details. “No further information will be provided at this time,” Ms. Manning-Sartori said. Mr. Raines had announced he was retiring on June 30 and has not responded to repeated calls and text messages since his arrest.
