The parcel tax for the Bolinas-Stinson Beach Union School District may just get the two-thirds majority it needs for a renewal and increase after a vote on Tuesday. The unofficial tally had 68.73 percent of votes in favor of renewing the tax, which would be raised from $250 to $300. Of the almost 1,500 registered voters in the area, 534 turned out to vote. The district asked for the tax increase, which currently provides the school district with about $485,000 annually, because of state and federal cutbacks, decreasing property values and the costs of inflation; however, the district says expenditures will still need to be reduced, even with the renewal. The vote would authorize the tax to take effect July 1, 2014 and last six years.
