Homeowners in Marin can make use of a statewide rebate program by making energy-efficient upgrades to their homes. According to a county news release, the program offers rebates of up to $5,500 from Energy Upgrade California while lowering greenhouse gas emissions and utility bills, improving the building stock and fostering local job growth. The Marin County Community Development Agency’s Sustainability Team is promoting the program. Marin, long known for its dedication to the environment, has been ambitious with its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. The county’s Climate Action Plan calls for a reduction of emissions to 30 percent below 1990 levels by 2020. Emissions have been cut by 20 percent since 1990. Last year, 66 Marin homes underwent home upgrade projects through  Energy Upgrade California. Those households averaged $240 in annual energy bill savings. Projects eligible for rebates include upgrading a furnace, sealing or replacing ducts, improving insulation, sealing the building envelope and installing new windows. The rebate calculation is based on how much energy a project saves. For information, call (866) 878.6008 or visit bayareaenergyupgrade.org.
