A fire ripped through a plot of land in Bolinas late Saturday night, destroying two structures and injuring one person. The blaze that erupted at around 11 p.m. between Hawthorne and Grove Roads was fueled by the explosion of a 20-gallon propane tank that sent a fireball into the air. The cause of the fire is unknown. Flames spread to vegetation and home on the property, where Nik Bertulis was sleeping. He awoke and tried to extinguish the fire, Bolinas Fire Chief George Krakauer said. Crews from Bolinas, Stinson Beach and the county responded swiftly, battling the fire for two hours. Mr. Bertulis suffered third-degree burns and was transported to MarinHealth Medical Center and later the burn unit at UCSF for advanced care. Will Bartlett, a nearby resident, recalled feeling “the sonic boom of the propane tank blowing up” and rushed to the scene. He described chaos as neighbors scrambled to alert elderly residents and those with limited mobility, with people shouting through windows to evacuate.
