As the world’s attention has shifted to yet another horrific international conflict, Betty Grinshtein’s focus remains fixed on her Ukrainian homeland. When the war broke out two years ago, she quit her job at the Cowgirl Creamery, started a GoFundMe campaign and went to the Polish border to help the millions of refugees fleeing the violence. Fluent in English, Ukrainian and Polish, she had the skills and the determination to help people who often arrived with no possessions and nowhere to go. After three months of volunteering for a British nonprofit, she returned to Point Reyes Station, where she’s working at the Palace Market, teaching English online and saving money for a return trip to Poland. Ukrainians are still dying. Refugees are still fleeing. She still wants to help. She was recently offered a volunteer position with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees that would take her back to eastern Poland, not far from Lviv, her Ukrainian hometown, where her two aunts and two cousins still live. She is hoping they might be able to join her in Poland. Ms. Grinshtein will be posted in Lublin, a city in eastern Poland where many refugees have sought sanctuary. She would conduct intake interviews, perform administrative tasks and do translation work. “Their language skills are not that great, and the refugees need help navigating Polish society, getting their kids into schools, help making doctor’s appointments and whatever else they might need to get done while they’re living there,” she said. The year-long position comes with a modest stipend, but it won’t be sufficient to cover all her travel and living expenses. Ms. Grinshtein is also planning to earn certification as a simultaneous interpreter and will need funds to cover the cost of classes. She has started a new GoFundMe. “It’s harder to fundraise this time around because there are other crises around the world,” she said. “But I’m going to get there. I believe. I’m really dedicated to this next adventure.” You can support Betty Grinshstein’s next journey at https://tinyurl.com/BettyinUkraine and find our story about her previous trip at https://tinyurl.com/UkraineVolunteer
