The longstanding community Thanksgiving celebration in Point Reyes Station is back on the calendar this year, with some key changes. West Marin Community Services, the event’s organizer, took a hiatus last year in order to address challenges, including that two-thirds of attendees were traveling from outside of West Marin. Preparation of the event, which the nonprofit said was failing to serve the have-nots, was a Herculean effort that stalled the group’s activities for weeks on either end. The more-than 30-year-old event always took place on Thanksgiving Day and featured a meal prepared by volunteers with food donated from local businesses; this year, it will take place on the Saturday after the holiday and will be a potluck. Attendees are advised to bring their own kitchen wares. “We decided to do a pause, and really think about what was happening and why we were putting together such a big event,” said Socorro Romo, West Marin Community Service’s executive director and the event’s primary organizer for decades. “Yes, it was a beautiful event, a very fancy meal, I would say. But I wanted to revisit it, to pull together an event that really felt like it was for the community, by the community.” Ms. Romo said Mainstreet Moms will make a soup, and congregants from Sacred Heart Church will provide dessert. She hopes people will think about preparing main dishes but, she emphasized, “Those who cannot cook, bring whatever they are comfortable with. And if they cannot bring anything, someone will cook for them.” The original intention of the event was to provide a meal for those who were living on the street or were without family, and Ms. Romo said she hoped it would still serve that purpose, bringing together all generations and people from different walks of life. The celebration will take place on Saturday, Nov. 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Dance Palace. In a similar fashion, community celebrations will be held in other West Marin towns. In the valley, an interfaith Thanksgiving service with music and a potluck takes place this Sunday, put on by Gan HaLev, the San Geronimo Community Presbyterian Church, St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church and others, beginning at 4 p.m. at St. Cecilia’s. The Bolinas Community Center hosts a potluck on Thanksgiving Day, starting at 5 p.m. with doors opening an hour earlier. The community center requests that attendees bring a dish for at least 12 people and their own beverages.
