Progress on the sidewalk renovation project in Point Reyes Station hit a snag last week as several newly laid sections of pavement failed to meet the standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act. According to Matt O’Donnell, the public information officer for Caltrans, the issues primarily arose from site-specific challenges. One problematic area is near the Station House Café, where a recently installed county sidewalk altered the slope of an adjacent Caltrans curb ramp. The curb ramp, designed before the county’s construction, no longer met the requirements once the new sidewalk was in place. A few blocks away, at the corner by Wells Fargo, Caltrans initially constructed an A.D.A.-compliant curb ramp but later identified a safety issue with a newly installed planter box, prompting its removal and a reconfiguration of the area. The delays in the project are compounded by the need to install electrical conduits beneath the sidewalks, requiring coordination with PG&E. Mr. O’Donnell noted that most of the formwork for the ramps is expected to be completed this week and next, with inspections and concrete pouring to follow soon after. Work on the asphalt path in front of West Marin School will be scheduled once the sidewalk and curb ramp work is complete.
