The West Marin Mosquito Council and the Bolinas Community Public Utility District will hold a community meeting to address future pesticide use in Marin and Sonoma Counties on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at the Bolinas Firehouse. Since 2005, the utility district has contracted with the Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District to guarantee that the vector control district will use the least toxic pesticides available, as approved by the state and the Organic Materials Research Institute, an international nonprofit that keeps a list of low-toxic fertilizer and pesticide products. The contract will expire in March, and the council—which began as a committee of the utility district—is calling for a high turnout at the meeting to show that West Marin community members support low-toxic protocol for mosquito control. The council is concerned that if its contract with the district is not renewed, the vector control district may move to use higher-toxic mosquito-control products than have previously been used. “We want to renew the agreement with the district,” said Liza Goldblatt, the council’s co-chair. “We have a lot of organic farms. We have a lot of waterways. And we have a community that wants to remain as healthy as possible, without toxic pesticides.” The council consists of citizens and representatives from virtually all the government agencies in West Marin, and works to educate residents on how to prevent mosquito population growth. “Be sure your septic systems are sealed and screened,” Ms. Goldblatt said. “That’s the big culprit out here in West Marin. If they’re not sealed and screened properly, it’s an enormous mosquito issue.” The meeting will start at 7 p.m.
