A series of projects to rehabilitate aging roads in West Marin will begin at the end of the month. The work, estimated at over $7 million, will take place across Inverness, San Geronimo and Chileno Valleys, and east of Point Reyes Station. Three miles of Point Reyes-Petaluma Road will be sealed with recycled rubber known as “crumb rubber.” Other roads—including Sir Francis Drake Boulevard from White House Pool through downtown Inverness, Via de la Vista and Camino del Mar in Seahaven, and Central Avenue in Woodacre—will receive conventional asphalt sealing. Julian Kaelon, a spokesman for the Department of Public Works, said the crumb rubber project will save 6,000 rubber tires from going to a landfill. “Rubberized paving is a great way to simultaneously improve our road quality and support our communitywide efforts to reduce Marin’s carbon footprint,” a press release stated. Public Works is initiating two more rehabilitation projects covering 14 miles of roadway in San Geronimo, Forest Knolls and Wilson Hill Road between Hicks Valley and Chileno Valley Roads. Construction is expected to begin next month with brief lane closures causing up to 10-minute delays, aiming for completion by next summer and pausing during winter weather.
