Point Reyes Station’s Papermill Creek Children’s Corner preschool offers sliding scale tuition for low-income families. But some still can’t afford it. Now Lourdes Romo, the school’s new energetic executive director, is fundraising for a new scholarship program to help. “‘It’s heartbreaking when [these families] come in. We do a tour; we talk about how great it is. Then we go through the fee schedule, and they just sink,” said Ms. Romo, who took the helm in May after working as a family advocate for West Marin School. “We’re trying to close the achievement gap. But by kindergarten second-language learners, Latino children and low-income families are way behind.” The preschool, which is open 40 hours a week and serves seven to 15 kids a day, cannot reduce tuition because the funds are required to pay teachers’ salaries and operating costs. Ms. Romo hopes to set up a system of ongoing support through a mix of individual donors, local agencies and grants. “I’m knocking on every door,” she said. Right now, she knows of six or eight families who want to enroll their kids but cannot pay the monthly tuition. Her goal is to help all of them. Papermill is currently enrolling students and will host an open house on Sept. 9, from 6 to 7:30 p.m at 503 B Street.. For more information about donating to the scholarship program, contact Ms. Romo at (415) 663-9114; she also strongly encourages walk-ins.
