The Palace Market is celebrating 40 years under the Rocca family’s ownership by offering packaged giveaways to the 40th customer from April 18 to 21, as well as other promotions throughout the year. The market first opened its doors 115 years go as the Point Reyes Emporium, where owner Pietro Scilacci hawked bulk foods, wagons, lumber and dynamite, among other sundries. Today the market is owned and operated by Mary Rocca, who in 2000 took over from her mother Dorothy, who had been operating it for close to three decades. Since taking the reins, Ms. Rocca has increased the selection of organic and local products, selling locally sourced bread, cheese, desserts and more. Local historian Dewey Livingston’s self-published book on the history of the market, The People’s Store: The History of the Point Reyes Emporium, can be purchased by contacting Mr. Livingston at [email protected] or calling (415) 669.7706.
