Tomales suffered a one-two punch with the closure of K&A Takeaway, which sold its last gourmet sandwich last winter, and the William Tell House, which shuttered after the pandemic. Now, locals and visitors have some culinary news to celebrate. Shannon Gregory, who owns Route One Bakery and Kitchen and the Marshall Store, has opened an outpost of his bayside oyster joint in the tiny space previously occupied by K&A. It serves a limited version of the Marshall menu, including clam chowder, ceviche and fish tacos, from a takeout window on Dillon Beach Road. Out the Door’s tiny but mighty kitchen is run by Mark Malicki, a Sonoma County chef who previously cooked at the Casino Bar & Grill in Bodega and more recently ran a highly praised pop-up called de Havilland out of the Tea Room in Petaluma. “He’s got quite a bit of local celebrity,” Mr. Gregory said. Out the Door operates from noon until 6 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. On Fridays and Saturdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., diners wishing to pair their tacos with beer or wine can walk across the highway and take an outdoor table at the bakery. Amy Carpenter, who ran K&A for 11 years, is now working there, continuing to make tasty sandwiches. Mr. Gregory is glad she joined the team. “I didn’t want to see another business close down in Tomales, you know. We have a great little town and we really want to see it become a destination for food,” he said. Mr. Malicki is doing his part to fulfill that vision, crafting a simple rotating menu with local ingredients. Last week, he was serving shrimp tacos, lime-cured halibut ceviche, and True Grass Farms brisket tacos with melty Oaxacan cheese and salsa matcha. “The menu has just five or six things each day, but it’s constantly changing, which should keep everybody interested,” Mr. Gregory said. Mr. Malicki, who is 65, said he enjoys the pace of his new job after years of working late and stressful nights. “I’ve never had a day job before,” he said. “This is a new phase for me. But I love this phase. Tomales is a great place to be. This part of the world is where I feel most comfortable.”
