North Marin Water District is still warning its customers in Point Reyes Station, Olema and Marshall about salty drinking water even as a brand new well is pumping more than 240,000 gallons a day. But the problem won’t persist for long, officials say: Saline water from the district’s older Coast Guard wells is just making its way out of the system. The latest round of notices, meant especially for customers on low-sodium diets, indicates that water in the distribution system still contains more than 50 milligrams per liter of sodium, a result of seawater intrusion. But that doesn’t suggest a problem with the Gallagher Well II, which began pumping last month, said Pablo Ramudo, the district’s water quality supervisor. “There may still be some lingering salt in our distribution system as it takes a few weeks to completely turn all the water over,” he said. “After the next few weeks, I don’t see this as a problem we will be dealing with again for quite some time.”
