Tomales High School students will still have to be at school at 8:05 a.m. next year, despite a California law that pushed back school start times in the interest of mental and physical health. Most schools have until July to enact start times no earlier than 8 a.m. for middle schoolers and 8:30 a.m. for high schoolers. But the bill made an exception for rural schools, and last week, Shoreline trustees decided the district met the definition. Different start times for middle and high schoolers would pose a challenge for school bus drivers in sparsely populated West Marin, where some students live more than 30 miles from Tomales.
