NextEra, the $15 billion Florida-based energy corporation that has been lobbying for over a year to construct two wind research towers near Dillon Beach, said this week that those plans are now scrapped. Company spokesman Steve Stengel gave no explanation for why the project had been abandoned, writing only that they have “made the determination not to pursue this project at this time.” The Marin County Board of Supervisors had approved the 200-foot towers last December, despite protests from several environmental groups and local residents who claimed the towers would be a hazard for birds and low-flying aircraft, as well as a visual blight on the landscape. This March, the Marin Audubon Society, Marin Conservation League, Environmental Action Committee of West Marin and six other residents appealed the project to the California Coastal Commission. Stengel would not say if the company’s decision had anything to do with that appeal.
