Two prefabricated homes were trucked from Novato to Bolinas last week, destined to be sold through a nascent equity-share home ownership program of the Bolinas Community Land Trust. The houses, situated on the Big Mesa, cost half of what the trust said it would have spent to build them, and they came with more amenities.

Arianne Dar, the trust’s executive director, said prefab and modular homes are also better on the environment. “I think it’s the wave of the future for all housing,” she said.
