Weekly Tuesday rains have inundated the Olema Campground this month, leading the United States Postal Service to move Bolinas mail services to Stinson Beach until further notice. Meanwhile, Olema residents are collecting their mail in Point Reyes Station. Many Bolinas residents were still adjusting to the move to Olema when they found out their mail had been once again rerouted. The frustration was palpable among the Bolinas residents who attended a town hall meeting hosted by U.S. Representative Jared Huffman last Tuesday at the Civic Center. John Borg and others explained the hardship dealt by the sudden loss of the post office and called for an immediate reinstatement of local mail services. Rep. Huffman responded that his team would continue to work with Supervisor Dennis Rodoni’s office to secure a temporary or permanent location in Bolinas. “I know how important this is,” he said. “We’ll try to make the post office more accessible and transparent—directly to you. And if we can’t make that happen, we will be a squeaky wheel on your behalf.” He acknowledged that relocating service to Olema or Stinson Beach was not sustainable, and said that street delivery service was a good option for those who qualify. Mr. Borg said that he and his compatriots were happy with the response and felt as though there was finally some momentum on their side. However, he said, the entire situation could have been avoided if the community had known about the deterioration of the situation sooner. “We could have done all of the organizing for this six months ago,” he said. In January 2022, the owner of the building that housed the Bolinas Post Office, Gregg Welsh, terminated the postal service’s lease, claiming it had failed to remediate an asbestos problem.
