Skeletal remains found in a remote area of the Point Reyes National Seashore were identified late last month as belonging to a Petaluma man who went missing nearly a decade ago. State forensics experts used DNA evidence to identify the body of Gerritt Henry Vanderveer III, who was last seen in 2012, when he was 44 years old. The remains were spotted nearly three months ago by someone hiking off trail near the Five Brooks Trailhead in the Olema Valley, but it took until Dec. 20 for the state’s Bureau of Forensic Services to identify them. The Marin County Coroner’s investigation has not yet found the cause of death.
