Calling all watchdogs! Applications are now open for the 2024-2025 Marin County Civil Grand Jury. Unlike a criminal grand jury, which is involved in determining whether to bring criminal charges, a civil grand jury focuses on civil matters and government oversight. Marin’s jury consists of 19 residents selected to examine the operations of local government agencies, schools, departments, public officials and other entities paid for by taxpayers. The jury is also responsible for investigating San Quentin State Prison and the Marin County Jail. Investigations undertaken by the jury are usually the result of a citizen’s request regarding an issue that affects the county at large. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, 18 years or older and a resident of Marin for at least a year. In the spring, superior court judges will review applications, conduct interviews and appoint members. Jurors serve a one-year term from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025. They should expect to spend 10 to 20 hours a week investigating an issue and then working together to publish reports with findings and recommendations for elected officials and county agencies. Jurors are paid a stipend of $20 per day for each day they attend a meeting and are reimbursed for mileage. The application period closes on April 19.
