A new program to raise scholarship funds for West Marin preschoolers is kicking off next month, through a partnership between the Mainstreet Moms and local restaurants. The project, called Dining for Kids, part of the Moms’ new Penny Fund, is enlisting one eatery a month to contribute 10 percent of a day’s proceeds—the first Thursday of the month—to scholarships for students at Papermill Creek Children’s Corner. The first fundraising night will take place on Oct. 6, at The Station House Café. So far, about five restaurants have signed on; the Moms hope to entice a total of 12, so each restaurant donates proceeds once a year. The idea for the Penny Fund came from an effort that the group made to raise scholarship money for the grandchild of member Cathleen Dorinson—but Ms. Dorinson’s daughter, who lives in Tahoe, suggested they donate instead to a local preschool. “Part of our own mission is a commitment to a viable future through education,” said Trinka Marris, another Mainstreet Mom. “It was kind of a no-brainer. There’s a huge need.” The Moms hope the simple program can provide a regular source of funds for the school, which currently offers partial scholarships to a total of 20 kids—12 through a grant from the Marin Childcare Council and another eight from other funds. The Penny Fund will also raise money through other events and efforts. Lourdes Romo, the executive director of Papermill Creek, noted that the families they help “could use more support, but we give what we can afford.” The grants the school receives are typically approved only for a year, she added, leaving parents unsure if they will be forced to pull their kids out.
