Many of the paintings by Lorraine Almeida, an artist who lives in Point Reyes Station, are a little bit dreamy. There are moons and mandalas, swirling galaxies and colorful goddesses. Ms. Almeida, who currently has an exhibition of her works at the Dance Palace Lobby Gallery and a reception coming up this Sunday, says she takes much of her inspiration from meditation and dreams. Her show is called “Inner and Outer Visions,” and some—the outer visions—are landscapes or other images she sees in the world. But many evoke her journey inward. The writings of Carl Jung, she said, have encouraged that means of inspiration. “He felt the artist is available to the collective unconscious and does a service to humanity by presenting humanity with things they need to know,” said Ms. Almeida, now almost 80. “So that gave me the courage to keep in touch with what I felt was coming through meditation and dreams.” Ms. Almeida, who also runs the Art by the Bay Gallery in Marshall, grew up in Massachusetts and moved to the Bay Area with her family after graduating from high school. She married early and had children. When her youngest was old enough to attend kindergarten, she enrolled in an art class at the Y.W.C.A. Her teacher encouraged her to pursue her work more seriously, so she enrolled at the Art Institute of San Francisco and has been an artist ever since. She says that certain images, like the planet earth and flowers, tend to appear often in her work. In the painting that graces her flyer for her new show, the opalescent petals of a flower emerge from a center that is a bird’s eye view of the earth. One aim of her work is to explore how our planet fits into the cosmos and how she herself fits in with the earth. As for flowers, “I feel that we are like flowers that start out as a bud, that have all kinds of promise, but by the time we reach our blossoming we’re close to the end. And we have to be willing to drop off the petals and let go, and turn over what we’ve enjoyed or done to others. So flowers are a big part of my philosophy.” Ms. Almeida’s show runs until September 13 at the Dance Palace Lobby Gallery, with an artist’s reception on Aug. 9 at 3 p.m.
