Panko-fried poblano and mushroom sandwich with shredded romaine and avocado aioli; artichoke heart feta and pork sausage sandwich with roasted peppers, onions and mustard; winter squash and lentil soup with za’atar croutons: These are just a few of the recipes that Amy Carpenter cooked up over the 11 years she ran K&A Takeaway in Tomales. Ms. Carpenter seldom repeated a recipe, but always served a hearty mix of homemade sausages, salads, sandwiches and soups from a tiny storefront on Dillon Beach Road. But last month, she shut her door for good. “There are a million reasons I closed, but it all just comes down to being tired,” she wrote in a message to the Light. “I mostly do everything myself, and it’s a lot after 11 years. I love the town and all my customers.” Ms. Carpenter sourced her ingredients from local bakeries and ranches and even her father’s garden in Bodega. Hard to catch, K&A Takeaway was only open Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.—or until it sold out. The grab-and-go lunches were appreciated locally and across the Bay Area for their consistent quality and good ingredients. Besides its nearly flawless record on Yelp, K&A gained fanfare from newspapers like the Petaluma Argus-Courier, the San Francisco Chronicle and more. Mattie Leeds, a Tomales resident, worked with Ms. Carpenter at the Tomales Bakery—now Route One Bakery—before Ms. Carpenter opened K&A. Ms. Leeds said Ms. Carpenter always had talent when it came to making meals with off-beat flavor profiles. The town will miss her dearly, she said. “We’re all excited for Amy, but we’re devastated that we can’t eat her food anymore,” Ms. Leeds said. “Amy has always had an extraordinary gift with unique flavor combinations and elevating staples to something unexpected and delicious. We wish her all the best and are so thankful for the years of delicious food that she shared with us. [K&A Takeaway] was pretty much one of the defining features making Tomales feel like a hometown.”
