Would you like to see Sir Francis Drake Boulevard renamed? After an upwelling of support for the idea last year from residents who advocated for cutting Marin’s ties with Sir Francis Drake’s legacy of slave trading, the county has pursued the idea of a name change for the boulevard that spans its length. Now, the five jurisdictions that host the majority of the boulevard—Larkspur, Ross, San Anselmo, Fairfax and unincorporated Marin—are each tasked with making an independent decision about whether to rename the road based on input from constituents. On Monday, Jan. 25, Supervisors Dennis Rodoni and Katie Rice will host a virtual informational meeting for West Marin residents and business owners and provide an opportunity to weigh in, while Supervisor Rodoni will engage in smaller conversations along the coast next month. Supervisors will make the final decision for the unincorporated area during a public hearing tentatively scheduled for March 9. By April, those jurisdictions that decide to move forward with a name change will determine a name selection process. If different jurisdictions come to different conclusions, the road could take on different names. The two supervisors have taken a lead on the matter, sitting on the working group of officials orchestrating the public process and hosting a listening session last summer and a subsequent informational panel. The hope is to implement any changes by the time two road improvement projects, including the major rehabilitation of the boulevard through the Point Reyes National Seashore, are completed this fall. “Through the lens of equity, this is certainly a worthwhile discussion,” Supervisor Rodoni told the Light. Next Monday’s zoom meeting can be accessed by calling (669) 900.6833 or joining online on Zoom, using the meeting I.D. 994 2269 4295 and the password 212141. Supervisor Rodoni will hold a virtual conversation on Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. with the Point Reyes Village Association, which has listed the details for joining on its website, and on Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. with the Olema Valley and Inverness Park Village Associations, which can be accessed by visiting his current projects website found at marincounty.org under “district four.” On Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m., he will speak with San Geronimo Valley residents, and a Zoom link can be found on the same webpage; on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., he will speak with the Inverness Association, which should be contacted directly for login information.
