Students of Shoreline Unified School District saw several new faces and some old ones as they returned to classes on Wednesday. The district has eight new teachers in its schools and two administrative interim principals at Tomales High School. When Superintendent Adam Jennings stepped out of his role as high school principal in 2021, John McGurke—a former language teacher at the school—stepped in. But Mr. McGurke suffered a concussion that left him with lasting symptoms this winter, and he has been working part-time since January. He will continue to work part-time this fall as he recovers. Mr. Jennings enlisted Nancy Neu and David Sondheim to serve as interim co-principals for the fall semester or until Mr. McGurke can return to a fulltime role. Mr. Jennings said he chose the pair for their experience working together at Redwood High School in Larkspur and for the former’s tenure in the Shoreline Unified School District. “I specifically selected them myself,” Mr. Jennings said. “Both have a lot of experience as high school principals. Their knowledge of the district was really appealing to me and they’re also veteran administrators and able to work with this unique situation. [Mr. McGurke] is still able to work with us a bit. We’re basically getting additional administrative support so he can take the time he needs in order to fully recover.” Tomales High also has a new education specialist and library para educator, while a new education specialist and counselor have joined Tomales Elementary School. There is a new transitional kindergarten teacher at Inverness School, and new sixth- and seventh-grade teachers at West Marin School. Ms. Neu served as the interim principal at Tomales High during the 2010s and has twice served as the interim superintendent for the district. She has also offered her services pro-bono through the Marin County Office of Education since 2019, most recently serving as interim superintendent for Nicasio School District. Before her time in West Marin, she served as principal for Redwood High School in Larkspur from 1999 until 2011, when Mr. Sondheim took over. Mr. Sondheim retired as principal of Redwood in 2022 after serving as principal for 11 years and vice principal to Ms. Neu for two years prior. Four days after announcing his retirement, a former Redwood student sued the Tamalpais Union High School District over the school’s response to alleged sexual harassment inflicted by a teacher in 1999. The lawsuit, which is ongoing, accuses Ms. Neu of failing to protect the student, who said the school attempted to cover up a sexual relationship between a teacher and the then 16-year-old plaintiff.
