Marin Water will soon wrap up the installation of permanent emergency generators at the district’s San Geronimo treatment plant. Three new generators, powered by 10,000-gallon fuel tanks, will ensure the plant can treat and distribute water for up to five days during emergencies and planned public safety power shutoffs. As the largest treatment plant in Marin County, the San Geronimo site treats and distributes an average of 13 million gallons of water to Woodacre, Fairfax, San Anselmo, Corte Madero, Larkspur and San Rafael—over half the water distributed by the district. Marin Water undertook the $5.3 million project to account for the rise in wildfires and PG&E public safety power shutoffs, said Adriane Mertens, the district’s communications and public affairs manager. Funding came from the district’s capital improvement program, spread over three fiscal years. So far this season the valley has not faced any public safety power shutoffs, which occur when there are anticipated high winds, low humidity levels, dry vegetation around equipment and other weather-related factors.
