Zuni Picarelli was sleeping in her Lagunitas home last week when she was awakened by an explosion. The next thing she knew, her house was engulfed in flames and the windows started to shatter. She ran from the house she had lived in for 45 years and watched it burn. “I didn’t think of grabbing a phone, I didn’t grab my purse. I didn’t even think of grabbing my passport. I didn’t grab anything,” she told the Light. “I didn’t have time. I was panicking.” Ms. Picarelli, 73, did not have fire insurance. The cause of the April 5 fire is unknown, but she said she saw flames close the location of the water heater. Her home was filled with artwork and collectibles accumulated during a lifetime of travel to over 130 countries. “I’ve lost everything I own…every piece of paper—everything,” she said. Her neighbors have rallied to support her, and one of her closest friends, Maureen Dolan, established a GoFundMe on her behalf. (www.gofundme.com/f/zuni-house-fire-relief). Ms. Picarelli is buoyed the kindness. “It’s amazing, everybody in the neighborhood seems to have a spare room,” she said. “The universe takes care of me.”
