United States Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer introduced legislation on Tuesday to require the Coast Guard to first offer the 30-acre housing complex it owns in Point Reyes Station to Marin County for use as affordable housing, a companion to legislation authored by Rep. Jared Huffman. The county would sell the property, which has 36 townhouse, a playground and a tennis court, to the Community Land Trust Association of West Marin, to turn it into affordable housing, the nonprofit said in a March press release. Without congressional intervention, the Coast Guard will put it on the public auction block, possibly as soon as October, and sell to the highest bidder. “Our commonsense proposal,” Sen. Feinstein said in a statement, “which is supported by local government officials and community groups, would put unused government property to good use by allowing it to be converted to affordable apartment housing for 36 families.” Rep. Huffman’s bill is now part of the bigger Coast Guard Reauthorization Act of 2015, which was approved by a committee last week, the final step before a full House vote. The Board of Supervisors voted last year to support legislative action on the property. CLAM has mobilized community support for the project, helping the project secure over three dozen letters of support from organizations like the Coastal Health Alliance and Shoreline Unified School District.
