The owner of The Farm Stand, a roadside business in Forest Knolls that sources seasonal food goods primarily from Marin, has purchased the nearly half-acre property after five years of leasing, promising more security for the enterprise and three tenants. Owner Jim Baum declined to disclose the sale price but said he bought it with private funds, a testament to a “decade and a half of hard work.” Mr. Baum founded the business in 2003 shortly after moving to Forest Knolls and watching the decline of the valley’s farmers’ market, where he said many producers struggled to make money. He began with several temporary stands before moving into the roadside space on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard that was most recently leased to a motorcycle repair shop. His business, called Marin Community Farm Stands, also operates seasonal pop-ups in Ross and San Anselmo once a week. “You have to be careful what you ask for in your dreams, because as long as you follow through and work hard, you will get it—it’s doubt and switching direction that gets you in trouble,” said Mr. Baum, an East Coaster who attended music school. He said the other tenants—Pump Espresso, Garage Land Marketplace and the newest, New Leaf Gardens—will remain, and that he plans to make some upgrades and start accepting food stamps.
