A drive-in movie theater is popping up in Tomales. For 10 weeks this fall, the William Tell House is bringing a big screen to the old high school baseball field, along with beer, wine and a menu inspired by vintage drive-in fare. “The overarching idea is to bring our community together in a safe way and still be able to feel like we’re socially connected,” said Ted Wilson, the owner of the William Tell House for the past two years. Families can attend for $40 a car, or bring a blanket and sit for $5 per guest. The first film to show, on Aug. 27, will be “The Goonies,” and the theater will run each subsequent Thursday until Oct. 29. When moviegoers arrive, they will be given a magnetic LED light to turn on when they need service. Starry Movie Nights in Santa Rosa is supplying a 40-foot screen and a transmitter so sound will come through each car’s FM radio. “To the surrounding neighbors, we’re not going to be blasting ‘Jurassic Park’ tyrannosaurus rex roars across the valleys and into everybody’s quiet ranches,” Mr. Wilson said. Masked restaurant staff will take orders for burgers, hot dogs, cotton candy, popcorn, nachos, candy and ice cream, so the only time guests will need to leave their area is to use one of the portable toilets. Lagunitas Brewing Company is donating beer, Stemple Creek Ranch is offering its grass-fed beef and Straus Family Creamery is providing ice cream. Proceeds from drink sales and parking will be directly donated to the Shoreline Unified School District to support its farm-to-table education program. With an estimated 75 cars and 25 picnickers, the event is expected to generate up to $500 for the school district each night and allow the William Tell House to expand its food sales to Thursdays. Leaders at the school district are excited about the idea. “It’s been really difficult with the town hall closed, we haven’t had a community gathering place in Tomales, really other than the William Tell, so I’m very much in favor of this,” board president Jill Manning-Sartori said. Board member Heidi Koenig agreed, and she said she hopes that people from Point Reyes Station and Inverness can come; Mr. Wilson said he would love to bring another drive-in theater to that area, if someone has the property to host one.
