An East Bay man died by gunshot while driving with friends north of Tomales on Saturday, the opening day of deer season. Richard Weller, a 58-year-old Martinez resident, was on a hunting excursion on private property off Middle Road, between Fallon-Two Rock and Marsh Roads, when a rifle discharged in their Jeep, according to Sergeant Mark Hale with the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Bullets wounded his hand and upper torso. Mr. Weller’s friends called 911 and a dispatcher instructed them in CPR, which they performed until fire fighters arrived and took over. Mr. Weller, who worked for a Vallejo-based marine contractor, was pronounced dead about an hour after the call. Investigators with the sheriff’s office and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife are still pursuing the circumstances surrounding his death.
