One week after a man was found dead on a fishing boat that crashed at Chimney Rock, officials were still trying to figure out how to remove the vessel from the treacherous shore. The lone person on board was Matthew Paul, a 49-year-old crabber from Half Moon Bay. It was unclear whether he died before his boat, the Westerly, was discovered, according to Sarah Herve, the public information officer for the Point Reyes National Seashore. The boat was spotted by a park ranger who alerted rescue agencies. After a Coast Guard rescue swimmer was unable to enter the cabin due to waves and currents battering the boat, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office sent a helicopter, which lowered a flight officer and a medic by rope. They broke into the cabin and found Mr. Paul inside. His body was transported to the Marin County Coroner’s Office, which has yet to determine the cause of death. The park service is conferring with salvage companies about how to remove the boat, which is starting to break apart. “The vessel’s location and condition currently pose a low risk to life, property and the environment in the area, which gives us time to thoroughly assess the safety, cost, and effectiveness of various cleanup options,” a statement from the park service said.
